The Highlanders vist Wakari School!!!

We were super lucky to have the Highlanders come to Wakari School to distribute the milk today. We made sure we used our beautiful manners to say "Thank you", when we collected our milk.
Then the whole school come together for a photo with the Highlanders.
We are all pretty excited about the Semi Final this Saturday (27 June) so we all cheered "Go Highlanders!!!!"  We hope they have a great game at the weekend!!

Room 9 visits Harold again!

Today we got to go back into the mobile classroom and catch up with Harold again!

Harold had been busy eating bananas, bananas and more bananas!  We decided that there was NO variety in what Harold was eating!  We talked to Harold by phone and told him of lots of other foods he could be eating to give him more variety.  We had LOTS of great ideas!!

After talking to Harold on the phone we looked at our food pyramid again.  We choose different food types and thought about where they would go on the food pyramid.  We were great at this activity!

Hamburgers were pretty interesting. We discussed how if you make a hamburger at home with fresh vegetables, meat and bread then it falls in the green/yellow areas.  However, if you bought the burgers from a fast food place then it would be in the red zone - eat only sometimes.  That was interesting!
Then - guess what?!  Harold went to outer space!!!  We were very interested in what he would do in outer space, so we put on 3D glasses and watched him.

We had a great time learning about the food pyramid with Harold!! Now we know how important it is to have a balanced diet with lots of variety!

Sports Activator!

Today we had a session with the Sports Activator - Coach Naomi.  It was a cold morning so we started with a fun game of partner tag.  We ran fast!

Then Coach Naomi got us to practise some of our great passing skills.  We passed a rugby ball around in a circle.  We made sure we kept our eyes on the ball and got our hands ready quickly.  There was a challenge - could we pass the ball around in the circle faster than someone running around the outside of the circle....?

No...!  The runners were just too FAST!  We have some speedy runners in Room 9!

At the end of our session we played a game of Ripper Tag Octopus!  It was so much fun!  We LOVE our sessions with Coach Naomi!

Celebrations!

Today five children from Room 9 received ice blocks for getting 5 Caught in the Acts!  Good work!!  I wonder who the next five children will be...?

Discovery Time!

We love our Discovery Time!  This is when all the Junior Syndicate children come together and explore different activities.  The best thing is that the children can choose which activities they would like to do.  What kind of things do Room 9 students like doing at Discovery Time?
 Making hats!
 Play Dough!
 Construction!

Room 9 meets Harold the giraffe!

We had an exiting day today - we got to meet Harold the giraffe from the Life Education programme!!

Harold came to Wakari School in a big truck.  We lined up outside the truck and met the educator.  He asked us to line up from shortest to tallest - we did it in super speedy time!

We couldn't wait to go inside!!  We made sure to hold onto the hand rail on our way in and carefully walk into the truck.

When we got inside we met Harold!! He was adorable!!

Harold had some exciting news - he was going to a birthday party for the first time ever, but he didn't really know the difference between party food and everyday food.

Thankfully the clever children in Room 9 knew which food is party food and which food is everyday food!  Together we worked out where different food types are in the food pyramid.  Party food is at the top of the pyramid, so it is food that eat we eat only sometimes.  Our delicious fruits and vegetables are at the bottom of the food pyramid so we eat them everyday.

After talking about the food pyramid, we talked about where food goes in your body.  We met Harold's plastic doll "Tam", who helped us see where the food goes in our bodies.  We discussed about how first we crunch and munch the food with our teeth.  Then the food slides down our oesophagus (that was a BIG new word for us!).  After that the food gets squished in our stomach and is then sent on to our blood stream to give us energy.  We used some of our energy dancing in Harold's truck!

We learned interesting things from Harold today - and we get to go back next week and learn some more things about healthy eating and healthy bodies!

And guess what?!  When the lights are turned down in Harold's truck we can see the moon and stars on the ceiling!  We thought that was fabulous!

Room 9 at the Art Gallery!!

We had a very exciting day today!  We went to the Dunedin Art Gallery!  We met Mr Neumegen,  the Education Teacher at the Art Gallery who showed us some beautiful artworks with a pirate theme.  Gosh we were an attentive audience!

We had a pirate battle at the Art Gallery!!! Who would be the champion pirate?
First Adam battled Mr Neumegen at Rock Paper Scissors - Adam won!!
Then Adam battled Tyler - and Tyler won!!!
Next Tyler battled Amelia - Amelia won!!!
Then it was Amelia against Ollie R. - and Ollie R. won!!!
We battled against each other and the top champion went against Ollie - and Ollie won again!! He was our pirate champion of the day!!

After that Room 9 students transformed themselves into a beautiful piece of art.....can you spot your pirate friends?  Some of them have FIERCE expressions!!

Next we went upstairs to the Education Area.  We watched a short pirate movie and then a fabulous pirate play!!  Ollie K., Jay and Amelia were the stars - they did an amazing job!

Then it was time to get creating!!  We learned about "drawing with scissors", and making fantastic works of art by just cutting out pieces of paper.  Mr Neumegen had a great idea to make animal pirates!  First we choose animal faces , and then we cut out bodies, peg legs, belts, shoes, hooks, hands - and then we glued them all down.  Finally we added some treasure and weapons and then we admired our work - we had created some fierce animal pirates!!!
